The Green Circle is a concept which was proposed by the Friends group and adopted by Burgess Hill Town Council about ten years ago. The town/district had already purchased a strip of land around the western edge of the (then) new housing development and perimeter road to the west of Burgess Hill as a public green space. This was known locally as the Green Crescent. It connects to two further public green spaces: Nightingale Meadows and Batchelors Farm, and together they form a semi-circle around the town.
In recent years, the paths through these green spaces have been improved, and paths to the east of the London-Brighton railway have been developed. Two-thirds of the full circle is now in place.
The Northern Arc/Brookleigh project offers the opportunity to complete the circle, and the Friends have been actively involved in discussions over its route through the new housing development. This is the planned route, which will be implemented in phases as the houses are built:
